Hi Anna,
Gosh - good question. I'm just over in West Trenton (not Trenton - WT is nice) - right on the PA border and decided to definately move to PA a few months ago. Since then it's been quite an education. Kittanning, PA must be beautiful - I've been to Ohio Pyle and imagine that your area might be similar along the river and all those woods.
Just trying to figure out what was "for me" in a relatively small area of Lower Bucks county has been quite an education (and very enjoyable - but I like exploring). I'm quite PC savvy. So ... I have done LOADS of searches right here on Trulia. I've looked by town, by zip code, "by map" - using price range, # of BRs, Square footage, you name it. Ah ... ok - so then I drove around through different towns in that area and got a sense of them. And then figured out some interesting tax implications (earned income tax) of different municipalities. So ... some towns fell off the list that were very high on the list.
And you know what actually happened? I partnered up with a good realtor, and we had a detailed discussion of my needs, what I'm looking for at what price range and where I thought I'd like to live. The next day he turned me on to a lovely area that was not in ANY of my searches and is perfect for my needs.
Maps do have their place - absolutely. But school districts, the feel of a community, commuting considerations, property taxes, possible earned income (wage) taxes, what type of house you like, can all factor in.
Would you please be so kind as to provide more detail as to your needs? Where will you be working - how far are you willing to commute, are good schools a priority, etc.
