... Read more the learning environment. My child has flourished there. He feels safe & he isn't teased. His classwork was challenging and made him think. Project group is a great concept and I love to see what kids are capable of when inspired. There is no art program in the lower grades, but his creativity has not suffered and he writes beautifully now. And my thanks go out to all the teacher who have made this seemingly big school feel like family. We are very sad to leave. Read less

i have benn at HCLC for all of my learning time and i am nit impressed the teachers pick on 'popular' kids and over react for little bad things but when something big happens they ignore it until 2 or 3 weeks later and by then it might be too late. And the dress code it proposterous you cant wear shorts

... Read more that if you are not a good teacher you don't get a contract the following year. You want to know the bottom line? The school, like all smaller schools, lacks in extracurricular variety. But... its test scores are off the charts, it posted a ZERO failure rate on the AIMS and the last graduating group of 78 kids posted $3.2 million in scholarships and tuition awards. My children are new to Horizon this year. We had high expectations and I can honestly say that they have all been met or exceeded.It is clear from their test scores the school excels accademically.However, I am most impressed by their attention to the whole student and the emphasis the school places

Read more on imagination, group projects, problem solving, and independant thinking.They are truly preparing our children for success not just accademically, but as individuals in our society.I am equally impressed with the dedication of the leadership team.I also love the fact that my kindergartener is not wasting his time learning his ABC's and 123's as he would in other schools.I was apprehensive about the cluster groupings at the elementary.However, it is clear the system works.My children have made a seemless transition from their old school to Horizon and I hope they stay through High School (in the top 10 of AZ). I have been at horizon for 4 years and I can say that yess the teachers are strict and yes there is a dress code but they give you a good education for almost nothing (except feildtrips ect) So when you want to choose a school, choose horizon... Go eagles

I have a Kindergartner at HCLC. I searched very hard last year for the right school for my son. I am thrilled with Horizon. I am impressed with their attention to my son's abilities. He entered K reading at a 3rd grade level and 1st grade math. There were other K's his age with the same skills and the
... Read more teacher has tailored their reading and math lessons to their ability level. They use positive reinforment for discipline. The teachers and parents are kind to each other and supportive of each other. The drop-off/pick-up situation is handled well, not the horror I had heard about. Read less

Outstanding academic curriculum/Excellent preparation for college. Small classes, challenging courses, and friendly teachers and staff. 40 yours of community service per year is required to graduate. This school is best fit for academically focused students that want to have a lot to put on their college
... Read more application. Now for the cons: There aren't that many extra-curricular activities available and there is a dress code. Spanish is the only foriegn language offered but after completion of this course you will be speaking like a native. There is also no football team but the basketball and volleyball teams are good and exciting to watch. ... Read more academically gifted, motivated students seem to do very well at HCLC. However, students who are average or struggle acedemcally easily fall through the cracks. There are 55 - 60 children in a classroom. Although there are 3 teachers in the room (typically 2 certified teachers with an aide), this creates a very chaotic, noisy enviornment, where many students become a face in the crowd. Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level.
