I am a 2008 graduate of the I.B. school and feel this is the best high school in Alabama. The teachers truly care about their students and put forth a strong effort to help them succeed. ... Read more I had no problem graduating (even after missing 60 days of school). If your child wants to be challenged academically and pushed to challenge themselves, this is the place for them. We learn time management, social skills, a become intelligent, well prepared young adults when we reach graduation. We are more than prepared for college because we are taught on a college level most of our high school lives. The curriculum is hard and challenging, but the stress is well worth it. My graduating class of 77 recieved over 11 million dollars in scholarships. Read less

I graduated from JCIB in 2005 and I miss it! The teachers prepared me very well for college and I never regret my decision to go there. I've heard it has changed some since I left (mostly Shades Valley as a whole), but I still love it.

If you are a student who wants to be challenged and motivated to succeed, this is the place for you. If your child wants to really learn, then this is the palce for them. All classes at IB are taught at the honors (or above) level. My child had 4 great years here and got an exceptional education. She was offered $110,000 in scholarships. Her class of 49 students was offered over $6,000,000 (yes, million)in
... Read more scholarships to some of the best schools in the nation. The rest of the thousands of seniors in the Jefferson County System were offered only $19,000,000 together. That says a lot to me! The 4 years is academically challenging with plenty of long nights of studying but the knowledge gained is something that can not be taken from them. Read less

Advanced Placement
AP classes are college-level classes offered at the high school level. Once a student completes an AP class and passes a final comprehensive examination conducted by the College Board, the student earns college credit for the course. AP classes are specific and not to be confused with other higher-level classes such as honors classes.
Before/After School
"Extended day" programs where the school day is extended before and after school to accommodate working parents. These programs should not be confused with common after school clubs or athletic activities.
Gifted and Talented
A school system may identify 10% to 15% or more of its student population as gifted and talented. A brief description of each area of giftedness or talent as defined by the Office of Gifted and Talented:
general intellectual ability or talent - high intelligence test score (usually two standard deviations above the mean), and high levels of vocabulary, memory, abstract work knowledge and abstract reasoning;
specific academic aptitude or talent in one area such as mathematics or language arts;
creative and productive thinking, the ability to produce new ideas;
leadership ability, the ability to direct individuals or groups to a common decision or action;
visual and performing arts, special talents in visual art, music, dance, drama, or other related studies;
psychomotor ability, such as practical, spatial, mechanical, and physical skills.
Vocation/Technical Curriculum
Vocational and/or technical courses offered within a comprehensive school, usually a senior high school.
Special Education Classes
A school or program within a school that provides services and training to students with moderate to severe mental and/or physical disabilities.
Adult Education Classes
Programs offering GED or equivalent courses for adults within regular schools, whether classes are held during evening or daytime schedules.
English as Second Language
English language classes for students whose first language is not English.
